Lewis Hine Pictures America

The Frick Art Museum, Through May 17

Captured more than 100 years ago, these photographs by Lewis Hine depict the lives of immigrants and laborers — including Pittsburgh steelworkers. Wisconsin-born photographer Lewis Hine trained his lens on (often harsh) scenes of reality at the dawn of the 20th century: crowds of immigrants arriving at Ellis Island, child laborers toiling under dangerous conditions, laborers sweating in punishing industrial environments. A touring exhibit of more than 70 rare photographs also includes some of Hine’s work in the Pittsburgh region, documenting the men behind Pittsburgh’s booming steel industry.
