Two veteran personal trainers have joined forces to open FreeForm Fitness in Shadyside.
Exercising at FreeForm Fitness Gym in Shadyside
Ivan White and Melissa Jenkins — partners in both life and business — offer individual and smallgroup sessions at their boutique gym (in the former Barre Code on South Aiken Avenue).
With more than 50 years of combined experience, they feature science-backed workouts and adaptable movement practices designed to improve strength, resilience, and mobility.
Their approach is rooted in neurocentric training, which utilizes the brain-body connection to maximize results and enhance overall health, Melissa says.
“The fitness world has traditionally focused on biomechanics without incorporating the brain and nervous system. Yet the brain plays a big role. It contains the maps within our body and can give us instant feedback on what is and isn’t working.”
Melissa says that integrating brain-body awareness into structured routines centered on strength, mobility, and functional movement helps clients improve performance and well-being. “It enhances our ability to live a better life.”
FreeForm Fitness also offers tai chi, which involves intentional, low-impact movement and breathwork to promote mental and physical well-being.
Fitness for All
Melissa and Ivan work with all ages, including kids seeking to improve strength and conditioning to enhance their performance in organized sports.
They also help older clients improve balance, better manage pain, and stay active longer.
“Most people as they age stop moving the way they once did, and this is often how injuries happen,” Melissa says. “We help clients regain function.”
Fitness regimens are tailored to each client’s needs and can include consultations about nutrition and stress management. Initial client consultations are free.
“We meet people where they are and guide them every step of the way,” Melissa says. “We’re excited to have our own space in such a nice community.”
