Dining, Food & Drink in Lawrenceville and Bloomfield

Brothmonger

4770 Liberty Ave.

Soup usually plays the supporting actor to a meal. At Brothmonger, the soup du jour is the main event. You can get a fresh cup of the hot stuff or pick up a pint to heat up at home. The menu rotates, giving you a chance to try something new or watch when your favorites return (for me, the cheeseburger soup is a must-grab). Brothmonger auteur Sarah Coppolo has found her signature with the Italian Wedding Soup Hoagie, a spiritually chaotic-good creation that couples “mom’s meatballs” with braised greens, provolone cheese and parm. It’s the answer to a daring question: “What if the soup was the sandwich?” In fact, the sandwiches are equally hearty alternatives. Standouts include the Boyfriend — mortadella, ricotta and pistachio pesto layered on fluffy housemade focaccia — and the Elk County Hoagie, comprised of Virginia ham, Cooper cheese and hot pepper spread.
