Get into nature, learn with glass artists and enjoy free music — all without leaving the East End. There’s something for all ages and interests happening this week throughout the community at these Pittsburgh events.
Pittsburgh Community Events May 18-24
Pint of Science Festival
May 18-20
Have a drink with scientists at Trace Brewing and learn about their latest research and findings! On the first night, you’ll hear about microscopic organisms and the importance of a dark night sky. Night two covers substance abuse, including harm-reduction and ways to respond to an overdose. The festival wraps up with a discussion on policy, from City Council to healthcare. Doors open at 5 each night and ticket are $2 per person.
Summer Lecture Series at Pittsburgh Glass Center
May 19
The first Pittsburgh Glass Center lecture of the season kicks off with artists Ian Chadwick, Deb Crowley and Penelope (Rakov) Lee at Pittsburgh Glass Center. These internationally renowned artists will lead discussions about modern glass art. Interactive lectures are the perfect opportunity for established artists to learn from peers — and for novices to learn about the craft.
Stewardship Day at Frick Park
May 20
Get your hands dirty removing invasive species and restoring ecological diversity in the Clayton Hill area of Frick Park. This hands-on event is led by a restoration expert from Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy. While the scope of the work will depend on what the park needs, equipment — and bug spray — will be provided. Register in advance online; you’ll meet the group in front of the barn at 2005 Beechwood Boulevard.
Exploratory Urban Farm Tour
May 20
Explore farm life without leaving the city! Farmer AJ will lead a tour of the Garfield Community Farm; the 2-acre space is home to farm animals, a food forest, a peace labyrinth, a nature-inspired playground, a community herb patch, a seed sharing library, a bioshelter and more. After the tour, explore the grounds on your own — and grab some herbs to take home! The free tour begins at 4 pm and can last up to two hours, depending on group interests.
Meditation with a Monk
May 21
Who better to learn meditation from than a monk? Visit Carnegie Library of East Liberty to practice relaxation, mindfulness and equanimity. This program, which is targeted at adult meditators, is free — no registration or experience required.Â
Live Music on the Lawn
May 23
The county- and folk-inspired Nick Guckert Band (that’s Nick, pictured above) takes the stage at Bakery Square Courtyard for an evening performance. Wind down your day — or get your night started — with this Pittsburgh-based artist’s free show in the heart of Bakery Square.
Squirrel Hill Farmers Market
May 24
