Make the most of the last week in June. The days ahead bring concerts, comedy, art, happy hours, movie premieres and more. This week’s Shady Ave community calendar from June 22-28 is packed with fun (and mostly free!) events for all interests.
Pittsburgh Community Events June 22-28
Kurt Vile and The Violators
June 22, Mr. Smalls
Beloved Millvale venue Mr. Smalls will host indie-psychedelic rock group Kurt Vile and The Violators, with special guest The Sadies. The Philadelphia-based headliner draws inspiration from classic-rock legends such as Tom Petty and Bob Dylan, mixed with the meditative, looping structures common to psychedelic rock.
Pittsburgh’s Public Source Zine Launch and Happy Hour
June 25, Trace Brewing
Hang out at a happy hour with Pittsburgh’s Public Source at Trace Brewing — and celebrate the launch of their latest publication. Get a free copy of Public Source’s new Bloomfield, Garfield and Friendship neighborhood zine; $1 from each drink sale will go to support the nonprofit news outlet.
Comedy Tea Party
June 26, Bantha Tea Bar
Laugh with local comedians over fabulous food and drinks at Bantha Tea Bar in Garfield. Hosted by comedian/producer/writer extraordinaire Cassi Bruno, a curated lineup of comedians will perform for free. BYOB is allowed, if you wish to imbibe.
6th Annual Member & Student Celebration
June 26, Pittsburgh Center For Arts & Media
Local and budding artists deserve their time to shine! Pittsburgh Center for Arts & Media is celebrating 80 years of community education with a showcase of their student and member artwork. 52 artists will display their work alongside archival works from the last eight decades, allowing visitors to see the evolution of local talent over the years.
WAMO Day
June 27, The Fountain Lawn
There may be no more appropriate way to celebrate Juneteenth than with radio station WAMO; the influential station made history in 1993 by throwing the very first Juneteenth party in Pittsburgh. The Fountain Lawn at Highland Park will be filled with activities, including musical performances by WAMO’s Future Flava artists Harlan Tobe, Jr., Lia and Harley Dyse. Plenty of food vendors will be on site as well.
She’s The He
June 27, Glitterbox
Pay what you can at the Pittsburgh premiere of She’s The He, a coming-of-age comedy film about friends Ethan and Alex who pose as trans women to stop rumors that they’re gay — but, in the process, Ethan realizes she really is trans. The program opens with a short film, Las Cosas Que Brillan, by local director Kristal Sotomayor. The event will be hosted by Reel Q, Pittsburgh’s annual LGBTQ+ film festival.
Bach, Beethoven, and Brunch
June 28, Mellon Park
Spend Sunday morning at the lawn in Mellon Park enjoying the sounds of classical music from River City Brass — and enjoy a special “Best Brunch” competition during intermission. Bring a blanket or lawn chair and grab food from local vendors!
