It’s an especially good week for music lovers, who won’t want to miss acclaimed organist Nathanial Gumbs in concert with soprano vocalist Olanna Miller, an event that was rescheduled from a previously postponed concert. Pittsburgh Pizza Olympics

May 24

Be a part of culinary history at the very first Pittsburgh Pizza Olympics, set for this Sunday at Spirit in Lawrenceville. Local pizzerias competing include Driftwood, Badamo’s, Spak, La Grass, Slice on Broadway, Piccolo Forno, Pizza Lupo and more. Enjoy music, block party vibes, drinks and more — and vote for your favorite slice at this outdoor competition. (The rain date is Monday, May 25.)

Memorial Day Parade and Special Military Service

May 25

Honor fallen military members at the Lawrenceville Memorial Day Parade, which begins at 10 am at 36th and Butler Street and will be followed by a special service in Allegheny Cemetery. Guests are invited to enjoy refreshments and food trucks at the Butler Street Fountain following the service. Bring a lawn chair or blanket with you to sit and enjoy the traditional events.

The Thirty Ball

May 30

Celebrate Attack Theatre’s 30 years of creativity with a grand gala with a fun theme: Dancing Through the Decades. Wear your favorite decade-specific dress, whether that’s from the roaring ’20s, swinging ’60s or grungy ’90s, and get ready to dance! A VIP reception kicks things off at 6:30; general admission begins at 7:30 pm at Rockwell Park. There are special ticket rates available for students, educators, artists and seniors. 

Lawrenceville Vintage Markets

May 30

Browse vintage goods from more than 30 local vendors during this afternoon sale outside of Lawrenceville Market House on Butler Street. Keep an eye on Market House’s Facebook page for a complete list of vendors participating.

Isartaler Maifest — American and German Spring Festival

Sample traditional German food and beverages at this lively gathering, held at Croatian Park in Millvale. Dance performances, German bands, imported beer and wine, homemade German food and more will be available at this spring festival hosted by the German Alpine Culture Club of Pittsburgh.

Modern Calligraphy for Beginners at Bakery Square

May 31

This modern calligraphy class is perfect for DIY crafters, artists and anyone looking for a unique morning activity. Sip & Script will introduce you to the basics. You’ll leave with a beginner calligraphy kit and a starting point for your own stationary journey. (And yes, lefties are welcome too!) Grab a drink and food before the event, which begins promptly at 10:30 a.m. and ends at noon in Bakery Square.

Cathedral Concert — Nathaniel Gumbs, Organist

May 31

Virtuoso organist Nathaniel Gumbs and soprano singer Olanna Miller will perform classical and modern songs in this concert, held at East Liberty Presbyterian Church. Gumbs is a national touring artist and the director of music at the Riverside Church in New York City; Miller is a renowned soloist, famous for her time on America’s Got Talent. The concert is free for ELPC members; general admission tickets for non-members are on sale.
